After the Nazis took power, however, circumstances changed, and Germans of Jewish origin were targeted for persecution. Egyptologist Ludwig Borchardt and his wife, Mimi Cohen, launched a relief campaign supported by an international orientalist network, which made Egypt its headquarters starting in 1933.
